About Us (that is, Me)
My name is Scott Buchanan, and Eyefruit Creative is my freelance persona. I’ve been building websites for more than a decade for organizations ranging from small businesses to universities to Top 500 e-commerce retailers.
In that time I’ve gained a deep appreciation for human-centered design. These two principles undergird my work:
- Form follows function.
- Form enables function.
If the first principle alone were true, then there would be no need for creativity. If something worked, that would be sufficient. However, I believe the second principle is an essential qualifier—aesthetics can support function to make it work even better. All else being equal, it is easier to use a beautiful thing than an ugly thing.
The key to bringing creativity and practicality together is an unceasing focus on the user and her/his needs, in support of business or organizational goals.
I help my clients by bringing together a background in visual design, software development and cognitive science to design websites that people enjoy using.

Here's a menu of my tech chops (i.e., the buzzword part):
- I can build you interactive, multimedia, and/or mobile applications in HTML5, JavaScript and CSS3 (along with all the best mix-ins like jQuery).
- I can design and develop Flash with AS3 for those cases where HTML/JS/CSS isn't quite up to the task yet.
- I can query and process your data in advanced, object-oriented PHP code (including complex SQL queries as part of a RESTful, MVC architecture).
- Oh, and I can do it all very Agile-ly.
Here are some blogs I frequent:
- A List Apart (web technology)
- UX Magazine: Design (user experience design)
- Method & Craft (visual design)
- Notes on Design (design news)
- Convoy (visual inspiration)
